And the weaning begins!

Monday, 11 May 2015

Time has really been flying, Dot is growing really fast and this week we're embarking on the adventures of weaning.

There were a few of things that we needed to consider before we started.
  • Whether Dot was really ready
  • What food to begin with
  • Did we have all the right equipment?

Dot can now sit up, can hold her head up, she can coordinate her hands and put things in her mouth. She has been extremely fascinated by us eating. She is also nearly 6 months old and is constantly hungry no matter how much I feed her.

After going shopping, we are all equipped. We've got feeding spoons, bowls of various sizes and a collection of large bibs.

So on Friday, we began the exciting journey of weaning. We decided to start with baby rice as it can be made with Dot's normal milk, which means it's not too much of a leap from her normal feed.

It went really well! I fed her as normal and then tried her on a bit of baby rice after.

It was gone pretty quickly! I was amazed at how easily Dot took to a spoon rather than me feeding her and there was very little being pushed back out of her mouth.

The next few days were the same, with only a small amount of baby rice, Dot ate it quickly, and seemed to be a lot more content than she had been.

Today I thought I would branch out from baby rice to vegetables. I made her some broccoli purée. However, it didn't go so well!
It quite quickly came back out of her mouth, and after a few attempts, Dot wasn't happy. That said, broccoli purée doesn't look overly appetising, so I'll let her off!

After the failure of the broccoli, decided to change from vegetables to fruit, and mashed up some banana and with some trepidation, I gave it a go.

To my surprise, Dot loved it as much as she loved the rice. She again ate it straight away. Success!

Although Dot is my second baby, with Mikey turning 11 soon, it had been a while and I had quickly forgotten all about the adventure of weaning! I'm enjoying trying new things with Dot and I love the fact that both Mikey and Mark can experience feeding her, which they've missed out on in the past 6 months.

I've really enjoyed this week and I can't wait for the adventure to continue!
