A week into Secondary School

Wednesday, 9 September 2015

So it's been a week at Secondary School and Mikey is having a ball. He loves going and is enjoying every aspect of it, especially walking with his friends to and from school.

I think Mikey's enjoyment is in great part to the school itself. In the process of the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, Mikey met teachers and other pupils and experienced days at the school so he got really used to everything about it.

My main concern with him going to Secondary School, was and still is his severe food allergies. As you may know, I am understandably paranoid about Mikey having a bad reaction.

Going to Secondary School for any parent means letting go a bit and giving children more independence and although I want to, I'm finding it hard.

However, Mikey's school has been amazing. The school were already aware of Mikey's medical needs, but they also arranged a meeting straight away so we could discuss making his time at school the best it could be.
What I liked about the meeting was that they also included Mikey so he had some input too, which I really appreciated as he is the one that has to manage with his allergies.

Mikey can take part in everything at school and with a few recipe adaptations, will even be able to participate in food technology lessons.

Overall, this past week has been brilliant. Mikey has gained both confidence and some independence and I am slightly less worried about him going to Secondary School.
And, apart from a few text messages and phone calls (a day!) to check on him, I'm learning, albeit slowly, to let go a bit.

  1. Oi! This post just made me well up! Never will we be able to 'let our boys go' - they'll always be our babies. Tough stuff but well done Mikey!
I remember going to SS on my first day, mum took me (WTF) and I was wearing white ankle socks with black shoes (double WTF!).
    Lovely Post xx #PicknMix

  2. It's so hard to let the kiddies grow up. I can't imagine the worry that comes with secondary school - national school is hard enough! It sounds like the school is dealing with Mikey's allergies really well & it is fantastic they had him involved in the meetings as well! #PicknMix x

  4. So pleased he's enjoying it so much! Half the battle is them actually wanting to go to school, and it does sound like a brilliant school who will look after him well!

Stevie xx Thanks for linking up to #PicknMix
