5 Tips That Could Save Money

After watching Martin Lewis on 'The Martin Lewis Money Show' and receiving weekly money saving emails from Money Saving Expert, I decided that saving money would definitely be a goal of mine in 2016 (7 goals for 2016)

Here are 5 tips that helped me and I hope help you too!

1. Look at What You Spend

It sounds simple, but the first thing I did was to sit down at look at our monthly outgoings to see what could change or be moved. Not everything can, but there are some annual bills that could be cheaper elsewhere.

2. Contact the Company

After receiving my annual renewal for my breakdown cover, I had a look at their website to see if it would be cheaper for new customers, which it was. I then gave the company a ring and managed to work out a similar deal. It also meant that I kept my benefits as a long term customer.
By contacting the company, I saved nearly £100 this year.

3.Combine Services

Sometimes service providers give discounts if you combine services with them. I have both car and life insurance with one provider and I received a discount for moving my home insurance with them too.
By combining everything, I've saved us £140 a year.

4. Look at Energy Bill

Energy bills are always a bone of contention, so I like to keep a regular check on the cheaper tariffs. Sometimes, you don't always need to move providers to get a better deal.
I found a cheaper tariff with my current provider that saved me nearly £50 a year. It doesn't sound a lot, but every bit helps!

5. Check Direct Debits

We sat down and looked at our direct debits and were shocked to find that we were paying for two life insurance policies for my husband, as he'd forgotten to cancel one!
After deciding on the best option, we cancelled the second policy and the direct debit, and although we won't get any money back, we have saved £215 in direct debit payments if we hadn't have checked.

Overall, we've saved nearly £500 on annual bills, which isn't a bad start to the year! Saving money is also a bit exciting, so I'm now on the look out for more money saving ideas!

  1. Thanks for the useful tips! Sitting down and making time for going through the direct debits is definitely something I need to do. Like you say, it seems such an obvious thing to do, but I always seem too busy to do such things! Note to self - make time!! #PicknMix

  13. Good ideas. We have options to try and reduce our bills and are about to be making some phone calls to some companies in the coming days. Your right. Energy bills can be reduced as well as combined services. Angela popping over from #KCAKOLS

  15. Well done on saving £500! We took the initiative to save money too. I called the electric company & sky tv & got both bills reduced. There are some easy savings to be made if you just take a couple minutes to check. I think most people don't bother! Thank you for linking up with #BloggerClubUK, we really appreciate your support of our first linky & hope to see you again this week x
