Our Day At Linton Zoo

Tuesday, 1 March 2016

We love having family days out and if we know that we have a free day at the weekends (which doesn't happen often!) we try to plan a day out at a place we've never been to.

This Sunday was no different. After a little while of looking up new places, my husband chose Linton Zoo in Cambridgeshire.

I'd never heard of it, but both the kids love animals, Dot especially, who gets extremely excited by any animal. The other day at the park, we stopped for a good five minutes to look at a worm!

We bundled into the car and after an hour of driving, we arrived but were a little early and the gates were still shut. At Linton Zoo you pay as you drive in through the gates rather than after you've parked up. We had to wait on the road outside, but only for a few minutes.

Once inside, we went exploring! There is a notice that states that as it is a conservation park the animals might be hiding, so in order to get a glimpse, you might have to go round a few times!

As we entered, we were greeted by dinosaurs, which Mikey loved!

Mikey had the map and was in charge of our route. First we visited the Wallabies. Thy were so cute, but very shy! As we got closer, they bounced away. It did make us laugh, as Dot waved and said "bye"!

After the wallabies we saw a few different birds, but Mikey loved the Crowned Crane.

We were then greeted by Giant Rabbits! This picture probably doesn't do it justice, but the sign said that on average, they are 85-90 cm long. I tried to convince Mark to let us have one, but he said no!

Next on Mikey's list were the Zebras! What I thought was great was not only could you see them in their large field, but there were also large windows that went low enough to be at children's eye level in the Zebra building. It meant that even in a pushchair, Dot could still see :)

After the Zebras came the Kangaroos. They were at the other end of their pen sunbathing!

Next, we came across the Tapirs.....

Before walking down to see the Lions and Tigers....

and then Owls and the Snow Leopard...

The snow leopard was napping, so I didn't stay long to take pictures of him!

We then met some wonderful little creatures! Cotton top Tamarins and Dwarf Mongoose!

The Tamarins seemed to like the attention! They kept coming over to the window to say hello and pose for photos!

We then went to have a cup of tea before we went round again. Before we stopped, Mikey was attacked by a snake!

Luckily, he survived!

What I really liked about the café was that it had signs that stated food allergies could be catered for. We took a few snacks with us, but it's always great to know we could potentially eat there on our next visit.

After the lovely cup of tea and snacks from the café, we went exploring again. We saw some very scary snakes and spiders, but I 'forgot' to take photos of them!

Next, we went a different way and found some lemurs which we had missed the first time around. These weren't 'King Julian' lemurs, but endangered Crowned Lemurs and critically endangered Mongoose Lemurs.

They were snuggling up when we saw them!

We did see some Porcupines, but they were having a snooze inside, so we went back to see the Kangaroos. This time, they were near the front of their pen.

Dot loved the Kangaroos!

After going a few times round, it was unfortunately time to go. We were given one last surprise before we got to the car though. The Giant Tortoise was roaming!

There were a few animals we didn't get to see, but we will try to spot them next time!
We had a fantastic day out and would definitely go back again!

  7. Sounds like a lovely day out. I love giant rabbits, but like you say it's hard to understand the size of them from the pictures. I bet they were gorgeous though.
