Entertaining the Children in the Summer Holidays

Wednesday, 9 August 2017

Although the Summer holidays are a great time when we can spend some quality time with the children, it can also be hard to find ways to entertain them too. Especially when you hear the inevitable "I'm bored" for the hundredth time!

With that in mind, here are just a few ways that you can keep the kids entertained this Summer.

Make a Den

Making a fort or a den can be really good fun and not just for the kids! Empty the airing cupboard of any extra blankets and pillows, grab some extra chairs and very soon you can have your very own den. The best thing is that this can be done both inside or out, so isn't weather dependent :)

Go for a walk/bike ride/scoot

Nothing blows away cobwebs like a good walk through the local park. Or even for the kids, a bike or scooter ride. I know that Mikey loves riding on his scooter alongside us when we go for a walk and both Dot and Mikey love riding off together in the park, whatever the weather, Dot on her toddler bike and Mikey on his scooter, much like the ones found at Skate Hut. I'm looking forward to getting Dot her very own Skate Hut micro scooter for her birthday, so she can scoot off with her brother!

 Create an obstacle course

Creating an obstacle course is great fun for the whole family and can be made in your own garden. The best thing is that you don't need many props. You can just grab a stopwatch and see who can get the best time! Activities could include a drill with a football, skipping rope challenges and even frog jumps and bunny hops for the younger ones :)

 Treasure hunt

Similar to an obstacle course, this is an activity that the whole family can get involved in and can be done in the garden. Cut out a few clues, hide them around the garden; in flower pots, behind furniture and lead the kids to their very own treasure. You can even have a couple of different treasure hunts going at once- perfect for older ones or a larger family! The best bit is that this activity can be as long or as short as you want!

Camp outside

Now, judging by the weather recently, this might not be something that you want to do in the next few days! Having a camp out can be a really fun activity, especially for the older kids. Plus, it's not something that you can start early in the afternoon; setting up the tent and sorting food for a midnight snack, which is a must for any sleepover!

Warning: Mikey tried this a few years ago with his dad. He slept like a baby, but hubby did not, so you might want a friend to camp out with them instead?!

I hope these ideas help keep both the kids and you entertained this Summer. Let me know if you try any of them and how you got on!
