Splendor: The Greatest Gemstone Merchants of the Renaissance

Friday, 29 December 2017

Hi everyone. I hope you had a great Christmas! Welcome to another review from the Board Game Bloggers Club! As always over the festive period, we've been playing lots of board games. This month, I want to show you a game we've been playing a lot of called Splendor.

When I first opened Splendor, I wasn't really sure what it was going to be like. We're used to playing  board games with counters or stand alone card games, but Splendor is a card game within a board game!

It is a game for two to four players aged 10 and over, so Mikey and I played while Dot had storytime with Daddy :)

Set in the Renaissance, each player is a merchant who collects gemstones so they can buy development cards that can help them gain prestige and win the game! As you play, you use your gemstones to buy development cards that help you buy mines, transportation, hire artisans and woo the nobles, all while trying to earn prestige points. With the winner being the player who gets to 15 points first.

To those of you that have never played this game before, it might seem a little convoluted, but far from it. Splendor is a very easy game to pick up, so perfect for new players, but it is also is a really fun game that can be played again and again. They are no long winded rules, so it is easy to follow and can be picked up and played without really reminding yourself on the game play.

We also found that because it was so fast-paced, we could easily play a couple of games each time we sat down to play. We played for over 2 hours and didn't even realise. We even forgot about eating, which for those who know my family, know that that's unheard of!

Splendor is suitable for 2 to 4 players, aged 10 years and over. It is available to buy on Amazon retailing for £25.99, although it is on offer at the moment. This is such a different game to one that I would normally play, but it is a brilliant game and one that I can see being a firm family favourite!

Disclaimer: We were sent Splendor in return for our honest opinion. AS always, our opinions are our own.
